Honestly I have never left a bad review in my life but I can’t stand by and not express my experience. I came in because I assumed my alternator was out and I ended up being told that my serpentine belt was missing and the belt tensioner also needed to be replaced. I was told I would be paying around $800. I was shocked and very upset. $800 was something that would‘ve made my life very difficult. (I’m 22 and in college). I was devastated and not sure what to do. I ended up calling my dad who is pretty handy and he told me we could attempt to work on it ourselves. After towing it home we did the work ourselves and all that was missing was the serpentine belt. Which I paid $25 for. The belt tensioner was is in PERFECT condition. We put the belt back on in the matter of 20 minutes. Even if my tensioner had been broken I would’ve paid approximately $140 for that piece. I have absolutely no idea how you can charge almost $600+ for labor or whatever else you felt you needed to charge me for. I’m very frustrated and I’m tired of feeling like I’m being taken advantage of! Thank god I didn’t end up getting my car fixed here.

Shelbie, I'm sorry that the 1st bad review in your life had to be about an experience with us and I sincerely wish it had been a positive one, like it is for about 95% of our clients. I'm glad you were able to fix it yourself and save some money since it sounds like you're on a fixed budget, and I hope the belt is really all that needed to be replaced. There are a few important facts missing from your comments so I'll take the liberty of sharing them now. First of all, you didn't pay us one penny for looking at your vehicle and receiving our advise, which you were free to accept or reject. Secondly, you can't compare the price of fixing your car yourself to a professional service. The price will ALWAYS be less if you do something yourself when compared to having a professional do it, 100% of the time. Secondly, unless your serpentine belt tensioner had previously been replaced, which there appeared to be no evidence of, it is 10 years old, has almost 119K miles of wear on it, and is likely not in perfect condition. That is simply your opinion. Finally, I'm truly sorry you feel that anyone was trying to take advantage of you because that's not what we do at Steve's. The price of our repair would've been exactly the same for anyone else, you being a 22 year old college student has absolutely nothing to do with it. We charge a fair price, offer the best warranties in the industry, have the best highly trained mechanics, and use the highest quality parts. The fact that you chose to fix the vehicle yourself is absolutely your right and we don't have any bad feeling toward you for making that choice. On the other hand, perhaps you shouldn't have bad feelings against us because you chose not to pay for professional service and advise. I've been talking to Mitch at Steve's automotive and he's been an absolute help, he keeps everything blunt when you need to know what's wrong with your car and he will keep you updated on everything that's going. My car received an air filter replacement and brake pad + rotor replacements on the rear axle among other routine services at Steve's Automotive in Sandy. When leaving the shop, the engine sounded incredibly loud accelerating at 3k rpm and higher. In the 2 miles it took me to arrive home, there was a burning brake smell. After driving to and from work once, the engine noise persisted and smoke was coming from one of the rear brakes. I brought my car back in to Steve's Automotive for the smoking brake and was quoted over $2.6k to have both rear calipers and brake fluid replaced. I took my car home without having the service done. Upon opening the hood to check for the cause of the noisy engine, I found the air filter housing hanging open at the bottom but snapped closed on the top. I declined the offer for Steve's Automotive to reattach it, as another round trip with a bad caliper sounded unappealing for something I could, and did, correct on the spot myself. Although requested, I was not provided a refund for the air filter replacement by Steve's Automotive. Because I have no intention of returning, the offer for a free future oil change is immaterial. 100% customer satisfaction guarantees shouldn't hinge on the customer providing an indefinite number of chances to get things right. The brake issue was fixed by the dealership for $840 ($1.8k cheaper than the fix quoted by Steve's Automotive). I don't mind paying extra for high quality work and convenience, but that is not what I received at Steve's Automotive. Instead, this experience has cost me a large sum of money, an unplanned day off of work, and my own time correcting their work. Better quality control practices could have prevented this.

Lindsey, first of all, please accept my sincere apology for the experience you had with our shop. If I had an experience as you described I would have undoubtedly been just as unhappy, if not more so. Although we get it right most of the time it's obvious we didn't in your case. I know you won't believe it now, however, we have a team of really good people who will stand behind their work and will do whatever it takes to make things right. I agree with you that better quality control would have helped avoid this entire situation. We have a great process in place and are investigating to determine what went wrong. Finally, regarding your comments about the price you paid the dealer. The dealer didn't do $2.6K worth of work for $840 and we'd be out of business today if we charged $2.6K for $840 worth of work, so we're missing some very important and material information regarding these numbers and the scope of work they represent. I know you won't be returning, however, I would still love to resolve this so we can part ways as cordially as possible.
