I explained to the mechanic what I knew was wrong with my engine. His free inspection was him just telling me what I already knew and he suggested I pay $160 to actually tell me something helpful. $160 was just for the deeper inspection. Oh and he texted me to tell me he would call "shortly" which turned out to be 45 minutes later.

Brett, I'm sorry our free preliminary inspection didn't give you more information than you already had, it usually does. However, in those cases where it doesn't we do recommend scientific testing to provide an accurate diagnosis, otherwise we would be guessing or rolling the dice with your money, and I'm sure you can appreciate the fact that we don't want to do that. Everyone here is always super helpful and very patient! I have a habit of asking questions incessantly and they were happy to explain things for me over and over again and were not annoyed by my questions. They always do quality work on my car and when I can't afford a repair they do what they can to find a price I can work with. I literally could go on about this place for hours. They have never tried to screw me over like some places do and have always been honest with me about what needs to be done. I would definitely suggest making Steve's your mechanic shop, they're amazing!
