Today was the straw that broke the camels back. I had the exact same experience as “Rick” as posted in these reviews several months back. Today was the third personal experience where I wanted a simple job done and was originally quoted for one price which ended up becoming 3x more than the original. Whether it was a brake fluid job (complete waste imo) for originally just an oil change- where they try to scare the bejesus out of you or a complete transmission job that they said needed to be done what was originally supposed to be another oil change that I purchased as part of the car care plan and the list goes on and on. The car care plan is an opportunity for this repair shop to sell you a menu of miscellaneous repairs. As I stated above, I tried a complete different approach today and this time where I explicitly asked for a replacement of a furnished part and it ended up leading to a repair quote way way more than I was originally quoted. Even after they clearly explained it to me with wonderful techno jargon sarcasm- I could not believe my ears. My instincts and judgement were clearly warning me that their service manager was clearly exaggerating. I may not be a mechanic but I am have a college engineering degree. I am not saying that all of their service people are crooks but they definitely like to pump you for more than what is needed. Sure- one could argue that every single part in an automobile can be repaired for piece of mind - but if it isn’t broken- why the heck should I be spending money to replace it?As for the other case repairs- I ended up getting a second estimate elsewhere for 30% cheaper. Ultimately- this is what we should always be doing regardless. At least they were honest enough today to say for me to take my business elsewhere (yes- you read that right) after a frank calm discussion with their manager today. And that is indeed what I did. I hope this helps you readers get a good perspective on getting single estimates blindly.

Stephen, it sounds like you feel maintenance is a 'complete waste', quoting your comment above, and due to this fact you would never be satisfied with our recommendations because we believe the exact opposite. The service manager in Sandy was rude and condescending every time I talked to him about necessary and unnecessary repairs on my car. One time he argued with me about a broken casing that was caused by their mechanic. He finally admitted the the mishap and fixed the housing, but only after I had to prove it to him and deal with his humiliation. Every time after that issue , he talked at me with an impatient and argumentative tone. The quotes for repairs given by the Sandy Stevens were a third to half higher than other shops. I was told by other shops that all the suggestions given by Steven's were not needed and that the services suggested had been done just recently before in their shop. The other shops said, Steven's automotive was taking advantage and questioned why they would give me such an unnecessary list and high cost for repairs . The Sandy Steven's Automotive shop was an unpleasant experience and they don't have respectful customer service. After reading other dissatisfied reviews, I see I had similar experiences other customers have had.

It sounds like your convinced that we recommended 'unnecessary' and overpriced repairs and I'm very sorry you feel that way. Just like doctors and other professionals, mechanics may have different opinions regarding what is 'necessary' and what is not, and pricing can vary substantially depending on the quality and warranty of the work being offered, so it appears we're missing the key facts needed to determine whether our pricing is fair or not. My family was planning a road trip and I wanted to make sure the car was in good condition for the trip. I spoke to a really nice guy on the phone and we scheduled an appointment. I show up on the day of the appointment and they took my car in for a general inspection. I was planning on waiting at the shop until it was done but it would have taken a while. So they asked if they could drive me to work and pick me up later from work! Well, I work downtown Salt Lake and they’d still do it! How amazing is that! I’ve never seen that type of service. Jim drove me to and from work. Super nice man. Had a great chat. Mike called me while I was at work and gave me a summary of the results of the inspection. They sent me a report with pictures explaining the different maintenance items that the car would need. Though I decided not to go through with the repairs, they were still very understanding which I appreciated. Jim picked me up from work and we headed to the shop. The lady at the desk was super friendly! I was prepared to pay for the inspection but she gave me a very discounted and extremely generous price ;) I can’t complain. Definitely will come back for car problems. You have gained my business.

Be very careful. These guys are slick. They have the upsell thing down. Not just the mechanics. The front desk person even has like 2 or 3 little upsells she tries to get you to do. You'll know exactly what I mean if you go in for one simple thing or a "check up". They'll find all kinds of things wrong that you have to fix all of the sudden. But don't worry, they'll give you a "deal". It's totally old school auto mechanic "upsell" stuff. It was kinda funny actually. I had them do ONE thing and they did do it right so that was fine but I've never gone back and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, especially if you don't know much about cars. They will take advantage of you.

Steve's Automotive is a fantastic place to take your vehicle!! They truly care about your vehicle AND your personal safety when operating your vehicle. The amount of detail they provide during the preliminary inspection of your car is great, but the full inspection they complete during repairs is second to NONE! I will only take my vehicles to Steve's going forward. Mike is very good at describing the work that needs to be done, and how it was done. And Debbie is great too, so awesome to work with!! White glove service from beginning to end! Thanks everyone!
