They said that they would diagnose my a/c system to see why my (relatively new) compressor clutch wasn't engaging. After 1-1/2 hours they told me that my system was fully charged but my compressor clutch wasn't engaging (maybe 15 minutes of work...tops). Then they told me that it would have cost $175 to further investigate? I talked to a former mechanic friend and he gave me three quick test to do. Relay, pressure switch, and condenser fan. Why didn't they do those checks in that same time?
Mark, it sounds like there was some miscommunication based on your comments. We always start with a free preliminary inspection to gather enough information to know how to proceed, this is not a diagnosis, it's a 'preliminary inspection'. It seems reasonable to assume you understand that as professional mechanics we charge for our time, otherwise we wouldn't be in business. This appears to be a misunderstanding regarding your expectations of what our free preliminary inspection would provide you.
